Charles Elliott Perkins’ children gave the land to the city in 1909 on condition that it remain free to the public. In 1971 the U.S. Department of the Interior designated it a National Natural Landmark; the city still owns the park. The landmark application, written by biologist Richard G. Beidleman, called it “the most striking contrast between plains and mountains in North America”. The Visitor & Nature Center is run by the Garden of the Gods Foundation, a nonprofit. What that means for a visit
No entrance fee, no ticket and no national park pass apply. Parking is free, and the park opens at 5 am every day, closing at 9 pm from November 1 to April 30 and at 10 pm from May 1 to October 31.
